Sacramento County Bikeway Master Plan

CURRENT BICYCLE MASTER PLAN ACTIVITIES

Sacramento County is in the process of updating the Bicycle Master Plan. The Sacramento County Bicycle Master plan is intended to guide and influence bikeway policies, programs, and standards to make bicycling in Sacramento County more safe, comfortable, convenient, and enjoyable for all bicyclists. The ultimate goal of this effort is to increase the number of persons who bicycle to work, school, errands, and recreation in Sacramento County.

The Sacramento County Draft Bicycle Master Plan is now available for your review.

NEXT STEPS

  • January 2010: Issue Notice of Preparation (NOP) for a Programmatic Environmental Impact Report.
  • Spring 2010: Public Outreach for the Sacramento County Draft Bicycle Master Plan and release of the Draft Environmental Impact Report.
  • Summer 2010: Hearing on Draft Environmental Impact Report at County Planning Commission.
  • Late Summer/Fall 2010: Adopt Environmental Impact Report and Sacramento County Bicycle Master Plan.

HISTORY OF BICYCLE PLAN UPDATE

Sacramento County adopted the 2010 Sacramento City/County Bikeway Master Plan on November 23, 1993, in an effort to coordinate and develop a bikeway system that would benefit the recreational and transportation needs of the public. In the sixteen years since the development of the 2010 plan Sacramento County has seen the incorporation of three new cities: Citrus Heights, Elk Grove, and Rancho Cordova- and an increase of total population from 1.1 million to 1.4 million. Updating the Bicycle Master Plan will provide a comprehensive view of the current state of bicycling in Sacramento County as well as provide direction for investments in bicycle projects in the future.

  • February/March 2008 Public Workshops: Public workshops were held in North Highlands, Rosemont, Arden Arcade/Carmichael, and Orangevale to receive input from the public to find out where people are biking, where they would like to bike and what improvements they would like to see. In addition surveys were distributed at bike shops, to bicycling organizations, and a website (http://saccountybikeplan.webexone.com) to gather input.
  • January 2009 Draft Bicycle Master Plan System Map: Public workshops were held in Rosemont and North Highlands for the public to review and comment on the proposed Bicycle System Map. Notification went out to local community organizations and participants of previous workshops and individuals who expressed an interest in being informed of plan developments.
